The Production Process of Copper

Copper processing is an intricate procedure which involves several different steps while the manufacturer processes the copper ore from its natural, raw state to a purified form suitable for use in numerous industries. In most cases, copper is extracted from iron ore with the aid of a chemical bath, typically through aqueous solution. The copper ions are separated from the iron ions via aqueous sodium hydride precipitation or by a process known as ionic diffusion. In order to prevent the occurrence of excess copper ions during separation, additional treatment with sodium hypochlorite or sodium fluoride may be employed.

Copper sheets are then grown onto a wafer-thin copper oxide coating which is a thin sheet made up of pure copper metal. Copper sulfate is used to prevent the growth of the copper sheets on the substrate and to improve its electrical conductivity and physical quality. A thin layer of sodium hypochlorite or sodium fluoride is then added to improve the electrical properties of the copper surface. Pure copper is then coated with bismuth oxychloride and lithium silicate in order to improve its corrosion resistance and to prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Finally, the entire surface of the new sheet is electroplated with white copper, which improves its aesthetic appearance and increases its malleability.
